About the Show
Written by Ins Choi and directed by Weyni Mengesha, Kim’s Convenience tells the story of Mr. Kim, a Korean immigrant who runs a corner store in Toronto. He’s worked tirelessly to support his family and build a life in a rapidly changing neighborhood. But as times evolve, he faces a growing divide between his old-world values and the modern views of his Canadian-born children.
With humor, heart, and honesty, Kim’s Convenience captures the immigrant experience with warmth and wit — exploring themes of identity, tradition, and belonging that resonate far beyond the walls of Mr. Kim’s shop. Playwright Ins Choi, who also stars as the title character, calls the play his “love letter to his parents and to all first-generation immigrants who call Canada their home.”
