Skazki - A Spell of Ice and Snow at Boston Center for the Arts
Skazki: A Spell of Ice and Snow is a captivating new production by Mystic Evidence Productions premiering at the Plaza Theatres at Boston Center for the Arts. Running from April 16 to April 20, 2025, this show blends fantasy fairytale, Shakespearean drama, and musical theater into a unique tale set in mythic Russia. Written by J. X. M. Corriss with music by Jonathan Blackshire, Skazki weaves a story of magic, survival, and deeper themes, described as a “prayer for peace.”
The story follows Katya, a young peasant girl braving the frozen taiga to find medicine and magic for her struggling family. In a land ruled by Morozko, the fearsome Lord of Winter, admitting to feeling cold can be deadly. Katya’s journey is aided by Ivan, a cursed soldier with no memory, and the enigmatic Baba Yaga, a witch who’s both ally and threat. As Morozko summons dark forces to test Katya, the stage fills with peasants, princes, gods, spirits, and riddles, all set against a backdrop of endless winter.
